Bosch was a usual target for rumor mongers: some said he suffered from mental disorders, others, that he possessed knowledge of occult sciences and spiritualism, as well as magical and alchemical powers. It was the scenes painted by Bosch that gave rise to all the prejudice. In his works, Bosch combined mysticism, medieval fantasy, demonic images, satire, folklore and parables. Bosch’s paintings are concerned with the life of Christ, but he also depicted human vices in his pictures. The painter managed to convey the fears of his epoch as well as the medieval worldview
